Movies can make us feel happy, sad, nostalgic, or romantic. They can take us to new worlds, explore different times and places, and make us believe in fairy tales. One of the best parts about classic films is their ability to inspire us as inventors.

“The way I see it, if you’re gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?” – Dr. Emmett Brown, Back to the Future

If you’re an inventor, chances are, Back to the Future is one of your favorite movies. In the film, Marty McFly is a teenager who is taken back in time and meets the younger versions of his parents when scientist, Dr. Emmett Brown, “Doc”, turns a DeLorean into a time machine.

Although the classic movie series contains some stretching of scientific truth, inventors and innovators can still take inspiration from the film. Inventors can be inspired when Doc proclaims, “The way I see it, if you’re gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?” Your invention is important to you, and you may have been working hard on your idea for years, so why not do it with some style? Take time to make your invention look and feel as stylish as you would imagine.

“We got here from hard work, patience, and humility. Don’t think the world owes you anything because the world owes you nothing.”- Joy, Joy

The film, Joy tells the story of the woman who invented the Joy mop. She becomes the founder of her own business and invented the self-wringing mop. The invention of the Miracle Mop led to a dynasty created by Joy herself. The mop, known as the Joy Mop, was designed to help make life simpler, specifically when cleaning.

In the film, Joy said, “We got here from hard work, patience, and humility. Don’t think the world owes you anything because the world owes you nothing.” This quote reminds inventors that without hard work, it can be impossible to move forward with an invention idea. Bringing an idea to life also requires a great deal of patience and humility. It is important to remember that creating an invention depends on personal hard work and determination.

“Tony Stark was able to build this in a cave! With a box of scraps!”- Obadiah Stane, Iron Man

The Iron Man films tell the story of billionaire inventor, Tony Stark. This iteration of Iron Man’s suit is an invention created by Stark in order to escape his captors who needed him for his building and technology expertise. Once Stark is able to escape, he returns to the United States to refine his suit and fight crime.

In the film, Stark’s ex-friend turned supervillain, Obadiah Stane, was quoted saying “Tony Stark was able to build this in a cave! With a box of scraps!” Of course, not everyone is capable of designing a super-suit out of a box of scraps, but it reminds inventors to utilize the resources available, no matter how silly or strange. Stop letting what you don’t have keep you from moving forward. Instead, work with what you do have to improve your invention.

“Listen up! Use those big brains of yours to think your way around the problem! Look for a new angle!” – Hiro Hamada, Big Hero 6

Disney’s Big Hero 6 tells the story of a boy named Hiro living in the futuristic town of San Fransokyo. When Hiro’s inventor brother tragically passes away, Hiro is left with his brother’s best invention, a robotic health care provider, Baymax. Despite the loss, Hiro turns Baymax and his close friends into a group of high-tech super heroes.

One of the most inspiring lines in the film can inspire us as inventors. “Listen up! Use those big brains of yours to think your way around the problem! Look for a new angle!” When Hiro says this, it reminds all inventors that sometimes, it may take looking at an invention idea from a different angle. Use your strengths to be able to solve the problems your idea may be facing and do not be afraid to change it up a bit if you are able to see a resolvable problem. Inventing is about improvement, accepting critiques, and moving forward to solve a problem.

Movies can inspire just about anyone, but inventors can look to films to inspire them move to forward with their invention idea. Maybe you’re stuck on a certain problem or have run out of supplies, but these films can remind us to work hard to solve the issues that face us as inventors.
