Have you ever had a bad GPS signal or one which wasn’t that accurate? That may soon be a thing of the past when the next generation GPS is rolled out within the next several years.
Next gen Block III satellites will be accurate within 3 feet, compared to the 10 feet that they are today. Although GPS systems are already accurate this means that your GPS can be more useful if you’re using it while on foot and not on your car. Seeing that Google is slowly releasing indoor Google Maps, accuracy will be helpful in helping us navigate when we’re not in our cars. Furthermore, although increasing accuracy by 7 feet may not seem like such a big deal, GPS systems are used by law enforcement and many industries, meaning that those 7 feet can save lives and a lot of money.
The Block III GPS satellites will be more reliable as well. Current GPS signals can lose strength in the presence of buildings or large trees. As such, the Block III satellites will make your GPS travels much more worry free.
Dozens of these satellites will be released within the next several years, costing the Pentagon $5.5 billion. Although civilians will take advantage of them, they will also be used by military personnel.
